Everywhere we turned, the crowd was so great that we decided not to stay, but to go on to Arrowtown which several people told us was much smaller and much more charming.

We left Queenstown and headed for Arrowtown where gold was discovered along the Arrow River in 1861. Apparently people still think there’s gold there because the place was packed with tourists. Try as we might, we could find no accommodations for the night, so off we went to Cromwell. Even there we had trouble finding a place to stay, but finally one kind motel manager called around and found us a place where someone had just canceled. Our hosts assured us that we could stay another night, but there’s not that much to do here in Cromwell and with the holiday crowd, there’s not that much incentive to stay. So come morning, off we’ll go on to Mt. Cook.
