Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all.
Rain, rain, rain! We got up around 8:30 AM and left Auckland around 11. Normally, it’s about a 3 hour trip, but it was more like 4 hours in the wet weather. We saw some wild but magnificent scenery on the way, but the rain and poor visibility kept us from getting any good photos. Also, there was no place to pull over for some of the best places and we had to keep moving. Given the weather forecast, we will probably hunker down here for a couple of days and seek out the local wineries. The weather is supposed to clear on Wednesday, so that’s when we’ll probably do our trip to Hobbittown.
The town, commonly called “The Mount” is actually named after the “mountain” which is an extinct (if there really is such a thing) volcano that sits in the middle of the Tauranga Harbor. It is plainly visible from most parts of the town (when the weather is good). Hopefully, the weather will allow us to get photos soon.
In the evening we met up with my daughter’s friend and her mother. We had a wonderful dinner at a mediterranian style restaurant and spent much of the evening with them. We shared many experiences and learned a lot about New Zealand and about places to go and things to see and, in general, had a delightful time. After leaving our hosts, we returned to our B&B and relaxed with a glass of wine and our book.
