A big day today. It started at 5 AM when we got up to go downtown to watch the balloon festival. It’s amazing to think that you can have space in the middle of the city to launch about 50 hot air balloons, but it’s true. Most of the balloons were pretty traditional, bright colors and very flambouyant. But a few of them were unbelievable. They started filling the balloons about 7 AM and by 8 AM they were gone. Unlike many balloon festivals in the U.S., they didn’t launch all the balloons simultaneously, but each one launched whenever they were ready. I will post a couple of the more spectacular balloons, but I will reserve the remainder for a sub-album. The most fascinating balloon was the Darth Vader balloon. That one blew my mind. There was one unfortunate incident during the launch. While trying to avoid a collision with another balloon, one of the balloons collided with a corner of the Treasury building and tore a hole in the fabric. After the balloons were launched, we returned “home” and had breakfast. Around 10 AM Peggy and I drove downtown to tour the Parliament buildings (both new and old). There was no place to park nearby, so we wound up parking next to the Canadian embassy and walked the long way back to Parliament. The new Parliament building is an amazing piece of architecture built into the hill, now called Capitol Hill, which is the geometric center of Canberra much like our capitol was the geometric center of the original DC. Federation Mall connects the new Parliament with the old Parliament building and is similar to the mall connecting our capitol with the Lincoln Memorial, but much shorter. The old Parliament building has been converted to the Australian museum for Democracy for tourists, students and anyone wanting to know the history of Canberra.

We finished our tour of the two Parliament buildings about 3:30 and drove back to the Tuggeranong Hyperdome where we picked up our tickets to New Zealand and did some more shopping for our camping supplies. By the time we finished that, we were wiped out for the day and returned “home” for a wonderful rack of lamb dinner. Now it’s time for us to start assembling our things and getting ready for our departure tomorrow. It’s going to be another big day.
