Another lazy day. After yesterday’s harrowing drive, we were pretty saddle sore, so we slept in, got up around 9, had a leisurely breakfast, took care of numerous administrative chores and started planning some special events. As it turned out, we can’t do all the things we wanted when we wanted, so we extended our stay a couple more days. (The beauty of a road trip.) We will stay here in Masterton and use our lodgings as a base camp until Monday when we will ferry over to the south island.
After lunch, we decided to go to the beach at Castle Point which is about 65 km from our lodgings. The road takes you through more mountains and the scenery is spectacular. We arrived at the beach at about 2:30 and spent the afternoon beach combing and exploring. There is an active light house at the point, but unfortunately, you can’t go in. We continued up to the lookout to take some photos of the beautiful blue Pacific. We didn’t go swimming, however, as the water is pretty cold. (The latitude here is south 40 degrees – about equivalent to the Jersey shore. But it doesn’t have the benefits of the Gulf Stream to warm it up. Instead there is a cold current coming up along the Pacific coast from the Antarctic.)
After returning to Masterton, we had a fish ‘n chips dinner and retired to our lodgings to call it a day.
