Day 76: Blackheath to Cowra, NSW

We left Blackheath about 9 AM this morning and drove directly to Cowra in the rain. At Cowra, we stopped for cappuccino and tea, then went to the visitors’ center which was just next door to the cafe. At the visitor center is a marvelous exhibit portraying the history of the Japanese & Italian POW camp located just outside town. This exhibit features a streaming video holograph of a young lady who tells the story and shows many photos of the camp, its prisoners and guards. It is touching to see that not all POW camps have to be horrible places. Prisoners in the camp were provided with reasonable accommodations and treated with respect; and in many instances, formed life-long friendships with their Australian guards and camp workers. In some cases, they even intermarried after the war ended.

As it continued to rain, we sought shelter at a nearby motel, checked in and settled down for the day. For dinner we went to the local Ex-Servicemen’s club for a crumbled (breaded) lamb cutlet dinner. The dinner was superb and very reasonably priced. After dinner, it was back to the motel for an evening of blogging and reading.

Cheers,
