It was another great sunny day. Our first stop was Bisbee, AZ. It is a location for one of our favorite book series. We had a very interesting tour of an inactive copper mine, the Queen mine. We geared up in protective coat, hardhat & miner’s light and traveled into the mine. Mining at the Copper Queen started in 1877 and was the catalyst for the growth of Bisbee. The mine closed in 1985 and was later turned into a tourist attraction. After touring the mine we wandered around the town and found a local microbrewery & Wayne finally had some decent beer. We also stopped into the Copper Queen Hotel built in 1910 and still operating. The Copper Queen Hotel is very Victorian and has been kept in pristine condition. There were some interesting antiques in the lobby complete with stamped copper ceiling.
Next stop was Tombstone and a re-enactment of the shoot out at the OK Corral – corny but fun. A trip to Tombstone would not be complete without a stop at Boot Hill Cemetery. Reading the headstones is fascinating. Every now and then you find a headstone for someone who actually died a natural death (but not many). It was fun and a trip down memory lane for Wayne. Many years ago he and a buddy toured it at 2 a.m. after closing the local bar. (Reading the headstones in bright sunlight was easier than reading them in the middle of the night using matches.)
We are stopped for the night just west of Tuscon and should easily meet our 3 pm check in tomorrow for our lodging on Coronado Is, San Diego.
