It was cold, windy and overcast when we left Conway, TX. Originally, when we awoke there were clear blue skies that we took as an omen for a lovely day to travel, but shortly afterward (just as the weatherperson predicted) clouds moved in. And later came the rain. Not a lot, and not continuous – mostly just a drizzle here and there. But cold and windy as well for most of the day.

We turned south on I 27 at Amarillo, TX and shortly afterward turned west on US 60 which then joined US 70 to take us into Roswell, NM. It’s amazing that from a moving car, you can’t tell the “outback” of the U.S. from the outback of Australia. These roads are as straight as a beam of light (strings aren’t necessarily straight) and go seemingly forever. We arrived in Roswell at 11:30 (having gained another hour) just in time for lunch. For lunch we had barbecue ribs that were truly outstanding. Then after a quick visit to the visitor’s center, we went to the UFO museum which is truly interesting. It’s easy to scoff at the idea of UFO’s and aliens from outer space, but when you look at the evidence, it makes you wonder. Given the vastness of our universe there must be some intelligent life somewhere. (There certainly isn’t much here.)

We didn’t spend a lot of time in Roswell, as it is a rather bleak city, and the crummy weather did nothing to enhance it. After our visit to the UFO museum, we decided to push on to Carlsbad, NM where, tomorrow, we will visit the caverns. Originally, I thought we might arrive at the caverns in time to see the bats emerge at sunset, but we were told that the bats migrate to South America during our winter months. As we were too late for the last tour, we will return tomorrow morning and after that we’ll head on to Tombstone and Bisbee, AZ.
