Day 2: Another Day in the Saddle (Tuesday February 10, 2015)

Not much to report as we stayed on I40 the entire day leaving Jackson, TN about 9 AM and finally stopping at a place called Conway, TX about 8 PM. (Don’t bother looking for it on the map, it probably doesn’t exist. The major intersection here is one of the thousands of “Farm to Market” roads that you can find all over Texas.) The weather was clear and fairly warm the entire day and driving was pure pleasure. Our original target for today was Oklahoma City, but it was so early when we arrived there that we were neither tired nor hungry and since nothing looked very interesting, we decided to move on. Unfortunately, after we got in to Texas, there wasn’t much of anything and we wound up driving nearly to Amarillo, TX (Conway is just 40 miles east of Amarillo).

I40 goes through the small, northern part of Texas between Oklahoma and New Mexico. It’s really flat and desolate. The interesting thing is that you cross county lines about every 5 or 10 minutes. (They must be small counties.) Conway has one good thing going for it, though. It boasts a Thai and Chinese restaurant that is really dumpy, but the food was excellent. Sometimes you luck out and find really great food in strange places.

Tomorrow, we head to Roswell, NM and, depending on what we find there (and time permitting), we may go on to Carlsbad. It’s been a long time since either of us has visited the caves there and it would be fun to see them again.
