We had another great day in sunny California. With a little bit of help, we navigated the San Francisco metro system. The Bart train system is very similar to ours in Washington DC (except for the ticket purchasing machines). Upon arrival in the city, we went to the info center and purchased a day passport for all municipal transit forms (cable car, bus, train, and trolley). In the course of one day, we were able ride the cable cars and the trolley. It was great fun.

After a hot dog lunch, we took the ferry out to Alcatraz Island where we spent the next few hours going through the (in)famous penitentiary. It was fascinating. We weren’t aware that Alcatraz had started out as a military fortress during the civil War. In 1859 it also functioned as a military prison. In 1934, it became a federal penitentiary with inmates who were serious problems in other prisons. Two of the famous inmates were Al Capone and Robert Stroud, “Birdman of Alcatraz”, who raised birds in Leavenworth but not at Alcatraz. We were surprised to learn that the prison staff and their families lived on the island and commuted to school in San Francisco daily (Monday through Friday) via the ferry. Adult children have been interviewed and indicated that it was a happy place to live and grow up in.

After our tour of the prison, we went to the local AAA office to update our maps for our return trip home. From there we explored Chinatown and had wonderful supper at a Chinese restaurant. The food was not only excellent, but so plentiful that we packed the remainder in doggie bags for tomorrow night. (Can’t stand to see it go to waste.)
After a long day of riding and walking about the city (most of which is straight up or straight down), we were ready to pack it in. Tomorrow, before we leave the city, we’ll drive out to the Presidio and spend some time in the park.
