Today was a travel day as we left Granada and headed in direction of Barcelona. We decide to stop at a little town Southwest of Valencia called Requena. It is a small town in the heart of wine country. We arrived too late for the wine tasting but did walk around the town a bit. It is amazing how the Spanish take care of these very old (12th – 15th century) buildings and continually use them or re-purpose them. We spoke with a gentleman who has lived in southern Spain for about 30 years. He said the town experienced severe damage in the Spanish Civil War but recently there have been extensive efforts to restore and revitalize the town. There is evidence of this everywhere. There is an archaeological site from 7th century BC!!
There were many wine tasting shops and a wine making museum but alas they were already closed when we arrived. It has several cathedrals some of which are being restored. There is also evidence of the Moor influence in Spain in much of the architecture in Requena. There are so many wonderful things to see!! It looks like our planned 2 months is just not going to be enough time but oh what a privilege to see even a little. Our lodging, Hotel LaVilla, is on one of the many small squares. It is well taken care of in old Spanish style. It is very comfy, has wifi and excellent food. Dinner is not before 8 p.m. Finding our way in on the very narrow streets was a bit of a challenge, but we have learned to park the car as soon as we arrive and explore on foot to find car worthy streets!!
We are meeting so many friendly helpful people and using a fair amount of “sign” language!! Another end to a fun day.
