Day 4 turned out to be a major change as we had originally planned to spend a couple of days in Seville, but when we got there the place was a madhouse. We spent a couple hours driving around, but didn’t see anything that turned us on and between the traffic and the crowds we opted to move on to our next destination, which turned out to be an excellent move. From Seville, we drove on to Cadiz which is only about a couple hours further.
Of course we got lost downtown and I almost drove onto the main plaza when a cab driver standing nearby stopped me in time and guided me to where we wanted to go. We parked our car and proceeded to the nearby information center where a most gracious lady helped us find accommodations. We checked into a local hostal and went out onto the plaza for a lovely dinner and some people watching. It stays light until at least 9 pm!! Then we went and crashed for the night.
On Saturday we spent several hours walking about the central city which, unbeknown to us, is the oldest city in Europe – settled by ancient Phoenicians about 3000 BC. The city is fascinating with it’s ancient fortifications, cathedrals and buildings. The streets appear wider than Seville and the city is extremely clean. Even on Saturday, it was comfortably crowded, but not overly so.

After breakfast, we strolled along the ocean and went to the Castillo de San Sebastian which is an ancient fort built in 1706 to defend the city. According to ancient tradition, the island on which it was built was the home to the Temple of Kronos, one of the gods of ancient Greece. The island is now connected to the shore by a half kilometer long levee. The lighthouse on the island is the second electric powered lighthouse in Spain and is 41 m above the sea. From there we went to the Castillo de Santa Catalina, another fort built for the city’s defense. Afterwards, we wandered through the city viewing the magnificent architecture, the shops and the people. Now it’s time for bed.
