Today we said goodbye to Nimes. It was a WONDERFUL visit. Thank you Helen, for suggesting it. We got an early start so that we could detour to Pont du Gard on our way to Nice. It is about 20 kilometers outside of Nimes and is one of the few remaining examples of a Roman aqueduct. It was built about 50 AD to channel water into Nimes. It was an amazing system with the aquaduct built at, above and below ground level. The aquaduct is at the very top of Pont du Gard as it crosses the river. The arches were required to support the water channel. Much of the aqueduct was beyond the river destroyed in the Middle ages and the stones were used to construct other buildings. During the summer season and with group reservations you can actually walk through part of the channel on top of the aqueduct. The views from near the top were amazing.

The aquaduct was originally built only for carrying water across the river and not intended for foot or vehicle traffic. At some time in the middle ages, a bridge was built alongside the aquaduct and remains in use today. They have a wonderful museum with a movie and an exhibit depicting the construction of the aqueduct and Roman baths as well as life in Nimes during its time as an important city in the Roman empire. We could have easily spent all day there but we needed to continue our journey.

Leaving Pont du Gard, it was an easy drive, via GPS, through Marseilles and on to Toulon. We went through some beautiful country along the way. Once we arrived in Toulon, it was a bit of a challenge finding a hotel room late on a Saturday afternoon but we succeeded. Toulon is an important port on the Mediteranean with interesting sights to explore. We found an Irish pub where Wayne thoroughly enjoyed a Guinness (& Peggy a glass of red wine) while we made plans for a light dinner and a leisurely sightseeing day on Sunday.
