Europe: Day 18 (April 22)

DSCN0848Well it has been another great day. We headed off to The Jardins de la Fontaine. It is a wonderful public garden area complete with fountain and waterway. It was built in the 18th century on the site of a Roman sanctuary. The gardens and area are lovely and are at the foot of Tour Magne which is a Roman tower in Nimes fortification wall. DSCN0868The tower was built around 15 BC on the ramparts at the highest point in town. It was one of 80 towers. It is 32 meters tall (approximately 100 feet tall). There is a spiral staircase inside the tower leading up to the top. The views of Nimes are spectacular and well worth the climb!DSCN0877

DSCN0887On our way down from the tower, we passed another ruin called Le Temple de Diane. It is believed to be part of the Augusteum, a sanctuary devoted to the worship of Emperor Augustus and his family. There is no information linking it to Diana, goddess of hunting. It is believed to have been built around 25 AD. From there we walked to the Castellum Aquae. It was the distribution tank for the water coming from the aqueduct 50 kilometers away and feeding the city of Nimes. It was carved into rock and some of the openings for the 10 lead pipes are still intact. It was built between 40 & 50 AD. It is amazing to see these structures still intact (or partially).

After all the climbing and walking we decided it was beer/wine time. We found a little bistro with
seating outdoors on the plaza. Then we headed back to our room for rest and computer time before dinner. Tomorrow we leave Nimes as we continue our European travels.
