Today we left Bregenz and headed toward Lyon, France. It’s a long way so we decided to spend the night in a small, out of the way town called Engelburg in Switzerland. On the way, we drove through Liechtenstein, stopped at a small cafe in Vaduz (which appears to be the largest city in Liechtenstein) for a snack and then on to Engelburg. Despite the gloomy, rainy day (with a few peeks of sunshine), the scenery was spectacular. We took the scenic route – no major highways. This brought us through many picturesque and charming little towns. Driving around the foothills of the Alps has provided Wayne with lots of driving fun on numerous curvy roads.
We drove right along Lake Lucerne. It was just beautiful. We drove through Lucern which looks like a nice city, but we are far more interested in spending time driving through the country side and stopping in small towns. With that in mind we didn’t stop, but continued on our way to Engleberg.
Although we didn’t realize it until we arrived here, Engelberg is a major winter ski and summer resort town in the middle of Switzerland. The town’s elevation is about 3000 ft, but it’s highest elevation is Mount Titlis at 10,623 feet. It is a charming town and because of the glacier, skiing normally continues into May. All the rain this week is putting a damper on the skiing though. It has been a delightful stop on our journey even if we are not skiers. The views of the snow capped peaks make it all worthwhile. We look forward to more views tomorrow as we journey on through Switzerland to France.
