We had a very comfortable stay at the Hotel Goldener Hirsch (golden Rose) in Reutte, Austria. We had planned to see the nearby Castle, but we were advised that it is mostly ruins. There are some spectacular views that make the long uphill walk worth it, but today it is overcast with light rain so we came up with Plan B.
There are 2 castles that are mostly intact not too far from our hotel so we headed there. We should have suspected a long wait (but we didn’t) when we were told 6,000 visitors a day. Long story short, Peggy really wanted to see the castle so we agreed to wait the 2 hours for the ticket. It was a timed entry group tour in about another 2 hours. We walked up the hill (about 30 min), scouted out the tour starting point and went to the restaurant for hot soup and beer – both were good and warmed us up after the long wait in the 48 degree damp. We also had a nice chat with a woman from Germany while waiting.
We decided to visit the castle, Schloss Neuschwanstein. King Ludwig II ordered it built and construction began in 1869. There were still some parts of the castle both inside and out that were not finished when he died unexpectedly (of suspicious causes?) in 1886. The structures and furnishings were quite elaborate and beautiful. It was worth the wait, but unfortunately no interior photos were allowed, so we only got photos of the exterior.

After our tour we headed west and stopped in a town called Bregenz. It was really lively for a Sunday evening. Apparently, Pentecost is a big deal here and Monday is a holiday. The good news is parking is free (if you can find a spot)! We are finally settled and will say Gute Nacht for now.
Ciao,
