Europe: Day 34, 35 (May 8, 9)

Sunday we packed up and reluctantly said arrivederci to our wonderful Tuscany host. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Tuscany and at Villa Il Poggiolo – a working vineyard and olive orchard in Costalpino. It was a short ride to Florence about 1 1/2 hours but it took a more time to find our hotel in the heart of the old part of Florence, park the car and get settled in than it did to drive from Siena.

DSCN1389We started our sightseeing with a visit to Galileo Museum just a short walk from our hotel. The Galileo Museum is located in an ancient building dating back to the 11th century and houses an incredible collection of ancient scientific and navigational instruments collected by the Medici dynasty and Lorraine Grand Dukes. After our museum visit, we finished our day with a delightful Italian dinner. Since Wayne is still battling a cold, on Monday we opted for a hop on hop off bus tour of Florence rather than a walking tour. It was quite interesting. Among other things we learned that Florence was the birth place of the Renaissance and was also the capital of Italy between 1865 &1871. It is also currently a fashion center with some major designers based here. DSCN1415We did one of 3 circuits before heading off to Michaelangelo’s Piazza with fantastic views of Florence. Then we visited the gardens of Baboli and some of the museums there. The Gallery of (ladies) Costumes is housed in the Meridian Building which was built between late 1700s and early 1800s. The architecture and furnishings were wonderful. Some of the gowns were very interesting and dates of the dresses/costumes were between early 1800s and 1970s. DSCN1450The gardens were beautiful but alas they closed before we had a chance to see them all. The fragrance coming from the Rose garden was intoxicating.

DSCN1451It was a wonderful slow paced day and we finished it by walking across the Ponte Vecchio (bridge); it is only bridge across the Arno River that was not bombed by Hitler’s retreating army. True to its history it has many shops and merchants along its perimeter and above the arches as it crosses the river. Tomorrow we will see the art wonders at Uffizi Gallery. The Academia Gallery with some of Michaelangelo’s works is on tap for tomorrow or Wednesday morning before we head to Venice.
