Europe: Day 53 (May 27)

We awoke to another cloudy day, but since the weather was supposed to clear, we continued with our plan to drive through the Pyrenees. As forecast, the sun broke through the clouds, and we bid France, “Au Revoir” in the sunshine. It still amazes us that as we cross from one country into another there is frequently no indication. We guessed by the change in road width and the signs were only in Spanish and not French as well.

DSCN1930Today has been a travel day – about 6 hours including stops – to San Sebastian. The Pyrenees are magnificent. We drove up, down, around and through them. France and Spain are connected with the longest tunnel, Tunel de Somport we have ever traveled. (The tunnel is 8.6 km [5.3 miles] and is at an elevation of 1,632 meters [5,354 feet] passing through the Pyrenees Mountains on highway N134 between Orolon-Sainte-Marie in France and Jaca in Spain.) The scenery has been spectacular, but unfortunately there have been few opportunities to stop and take pictures. Once in Spain, the Pyrenees lost the snow on their peaks, but the green mountain/hill sides are beautiful. In Spain we have traveled on some very new 4 lane divided highways with tunnels through the mountains rather than curving around or up and over them. This makes Peggy happier, but Wayne misses the challenge of the curves and hills.

DSCN1952DSCN1947San Sebastian is primarily a resort city whose industries are primarily tourism and commerce. It is a beautiful city with all the modern 21st century conveniences but with evidence of its roots before the 11th century. DSCN1958It is a 2016 European Capital of Culture along with Wroclaw, Poland. It hosts the longest, continuously running jazz festival in Europe every July. It has beautiful beaches and for the last 50 years has hosted international film festivals. It also hosts international surfing championships as well. With all the crowds, we were lucky to find a comfortable room close to the beach and parking.

It was sad leaving France, but we truly enjoyed the first leg of our trip in Spain and are happy to return. The only sad part is that we have only 11 days left before we head home. On the one hand we are ready to be home, but on the other hand, we are not ready to leave.
