Great day sightseeing in Saint Emilion. The wines are superb and the scenery is wonderful.
St. Emilion is a wonderful little town that was settled possibly before the 8th century. It was originally known for its limestone, quarried between the 9th and 19th centuries. Next the story of Emilion, a Benedictine monk moved to the area looking for solitude. He was soon followed by disciples and several religious orders including Benedictines, Franciscans, Augustinians and Ursaline nuns. It was a pilgrimage site to Emilion as well as a stopping point for pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela.
St. Emilion has been well known for its wine since the 1800s but its vineyards date back to the 2nd century AD. In 1999 it was named as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its continuous vineyard cultivation. It is such a privilege to explore the medieval architecture with the vineyard vistas. We wandered up and down steep alleys, visited the beautiful church and toured the cave where St. Emilion is believed to have lived. We also toured the church in his honor that was dugout from the famous limestone and is all underground. After that we climbed the King’s Keep. Its actual purpose is not known but it was probably part of the town’s defenses. It is a square tower about 10 meters on each side and 30 meters high. It provides fantastic panoramic views of the town and surrounding vineyards.
After touring this wonderful town, we purchased a picnic dinner and headed to our car for a very short drive to our home away from home. That was easier said than done. Our car got lost again! We had made a point of remembering we parked the car on route D122, but alas there was no car along that route. After wandering up and down streets and consulting our map we sought the help of the Gendarmerie. Fortunately, they spoke English and volunteered to find our car. They took the car keys and drove off leaving us at the Gendarmerie. 15 minutes later they drove up with the car. As it turned out, we were correct – it was parked along route D122 but at the south end of the town while we were at the north end of the town. (Well, the car should have known better than to be at the wrong end of town.) But we really have to give lots of kudos to the gendarmes who bailed us out of a very uncomfortable situation. We have certainly found friendly helpful people and police in France as well as all the other countries we have visited.

After recovering our wayward car, we drove “home” and had a lovely picnic in the sunshine overlooking the vineyard as we enjoyed our wine. All in all we had a wonderful day in Bordeaux country and we heartily recommend anyone visiting France to spend some time in St. Emilion. It is a truly wonderful place to visit.
