Day 38, Aug 24: Seattle to Mt. Rainier

We had a slow start to the day while Amy completed some business, and then we headed to Mt. Rainier National Park and an overnight stay at Paradise Inn. The weather was perfect with the wind blowing the clouds away and Mt. Rainier coming out in its full glory. After checking into our rooms at Paradise Inn, we took a short mile and a half walk up to Myrtle Falls.

Fireweed

Along the way we had great views of a subalpine forest and meadow with wild flowers. Although just past their peak, they were quite pretty. There was plenty of fireweed to see as well. It is still purple, but come fall it turns a vibrant fire red.

Following the indoor program, there was an outdoor program about the stars and planets including an opportunity to view them through a telescope. Even the prospect of seeing Saturn’s rings was not enough to lure us out into the cold lower 40’s temperatures. Sadly, we just didn’t have the layers of clothing for those temperatures. We enjoyed the fire in the huge fireplace with our glasses of wine. The stars (seen from the warmth of our room) were spectacular.
