Following our Windmill Village tour yesterday we headed in the direction of Hamburg, but because of the late start, we stopped in a small town called Apeldoorn in eastern Netherlands where we found a truly delightful B & B called the Villa Sonnevanck. The Villa Sonnevanck was built in 1905 but has been completely renovated in a manner which has preserved the old world architecture and charm together with all the conveniences of modern technology. After checking in, we explored the downtown section on foot, had some delicious ice cream and meandered back to our lodging. The weather was comfortably warm and bug free so we spent the evening out on the beautiful back patio until bed time catching up on email and some blog entries. Our hosts were a truly delightful couple who constantly fretted over us to ensure that our stay was comfortable. In the morning they prepared a veritable feast that was fit for royalty. We thoroughly recommend it if you are in northeast Netherlands.

The trip to Hamburg was uneventful and took about 5 hours.   After checking in to our hotel, we decided to relax, unwind, plan the next’s day’s sightseeing and catch up on the blog. But then, how does the saying go about “the best laid plans of mice and men”? It was a great plan but the gods were against us.  Peggy had drafted the blog on her smart phone but the internet service in the hotel was the worst ever and we were unable to transfer either her drafts or her photos or my photos to my computer. We were also unable to do any research on the internet, so after wasting two hours fighting the internet we gave up, read our books and turned in early. The hotel is very clean and modern and the staff are very helpful, but overall, it’s not a place I would recommend. Besides the poor internet connection, you are charged for any coffee, tea or bottled water, and you have to go down to the lobby to get your tiny little cup of coffee which is cold by the time you get back to your room.
