Day 7, Monday 20 Aug: Travel Day, Brugge to Amsterdam

Today was a travel and catch up day. We arrived in Amsterdam with a minor detour as we headed out of Brussels. Turning sooner than instructed by the gps, the lady in the box lead us on a back country odyssey into the Brussels suburbs where we finally picked up the main road that would bring us to Amsterdam. We were struck by how clean and pretty the area was.  In a few areas, 2 way streets became one way to protect trees or shrubs growing near the side of the road.

We checked into our hotel in a suburb of Amsterdam just a short walk from the metro and tram. Our accommodations include a small kitchenette so we decided to do a little grocery shopping for breakfast. We explored the neighborhood briefly and and found a grocery store which I believe is the only business in the world that accepts only Mastercard; no VISA, no American Express, only Mastercard.  Astonished, we returned to our hotel to empty handed except for some water and decided to catch up on our blog and communication.  Our hotel has a lovely rooftop terrace where we had a pre-dinner drink and tried to plan our sightseeing.  There are many choices – too many in fact. We will definitely take in a canal tour, a tour through the Heineken beer factory and a visit to the Van Gogh museum. We’ll be sure to let you know what else when we figure it out.
