Our evening began with a boat ride on the Salzach River. It was a beautiful evening to be on the river and we were treated to some great views of Salzburg. Next was dinner and the concert, both at the Hohensalzburg Fortress. We reached the fortress via the Festungsbahn funicular railway (built in 1892).

The fortress was originally built in 1077 at the request of the powerful Archbishops of Salzburg. It sits high on a hill (approximately 1500 feet) overlooking the river and city. From below it looks as massive as it is! Hohensalzburg Fortress has been expanded over time, and it is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. It was surrendered to the French in 1800 and was abandoned in 1861. The Fortress was refurbished in the the late 1800s and is one of the best preserved castles in Europe.
