As we write about our last full day in Vienna, we are watching a spectacular sunset. It’s like Vienna is pulling out all the stops for us as we wrap up a fun visit to this city that is the home of classical music.
Today was a fun day. We started out with a 75 minute boatride on the Danube Canal which runs parallel to the Danube River. You may wonder why such a short boat ride. The answer is simple – time. We wanted to see the Danube up close, but there is still so much we want to do/see in Vienna. We will come across the Danube again in our travels, but we don’t expect to return to Vienna. It was a very relaxing trip with some Vienna city sights as well as open water and green space. That is the one thing we’ve seen very little of. The boat ride was really soothing as well as relaxing. Peggy hadn’t realized how much she was missing greenery.
Following the boat ride, we headed to the train and back to Stephanplatz. First stop was the Lobmeyr Crystal shop with its amazing glass museum. We enjoyed looking at both the antiques as well as modern glass and crystal items. Peggy was glad she outgrew her little girl need to torch everything! Just the wide staircase, chandelier and mirrors was worth the stop. Next on the agenda was lunch at another outdoor restaurant.

We then spent the rest of the day at the Haus der Musik, (House of Music). It is set in the former home of Otto Nicolai, composer and conductor. He is said to be the founder of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. As we wandered through the exhibits, we heard great music and could readily picture the mid 1800s musicians and the wonderful music they produced in such a beautiful setting. There were a total of 4 floors with exhibits. The 4th floor had exhibits for children (of all ages) to explore making music while the 2nd floor included exhibits dedicated to understanding sound and its relation to making/hearing music. The 3rd floor had exhibits dedicated to Hayden, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss and Mahler as well as an opportunity to be a virtual conductor. The 1st floor was dedicated in part to the history of the Vienna State Opera and the archives of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. There were highlights of the annual New Year’s and Summer Night Concerts. It was a great musical experience.
After all that culture, we thought that a light dinner was in order. Austrian style hotdogs called to Wayne so that was dinner. After getting off the tram close to “home” we treated ourselves to ice cream for dessert – a delightful end to a delightful day.
