Day 31, Thursday, 13 Sep: Prague

Weatherwise, today is almost the opposite of yesterday’s bright sunshine. It’s overcast and cool with  predictions of rain. We started the day with a free walking tour of Old Town and the Jewish Quarter. We take these tours not because we are cheap but because each one that we’ve taken has been excellent. The guides are usually local, speak excellent English, are well informed, enthusiastic and work for tips. You are expected to pay what you think they are worth which is easily what we would pay a regular tour company.  They are completely licensed by the government (and pay taxes).

Our guide was all of the above. Her mother and grandparents immigrated to Canada from Czechoslovakia when her mother was 10. She has been in the Czech Republic for 12 years and plans on staying. The history, except for the Jewish Quarter, was mostly a review and clarification of that which we received on the bus and castle tour of the past 2 days.

Jan Hus is considered a martyr and Czech hero. He worked to reform the Catholic Church’s policies regarding Indulgences and the ability to pay (in lieu of pray) for forgiveness of sins rather than true atonement.  For this he was judged a heretic by the church and burned alive. This triggered the beginning of the 30 year Hussite Religious War.  He is also credited with the first written version of the Czech language in an effort to translate  the Roman Catholic Mass into to Czech for the common people who never knew Latin.

As in other European countries, the Jews lived and worked in a specific part of the city and were only permitted to own property in that small area. They performed valuable services in finance and tax collection for the government, but they were never welcomed in society. Their cemetery and two synagogues are important historical parts of Prague. We also saw a Jewish clock tower with Jewish symbols on the clock that operates counter clockwise.

Throughout the tour, our guide interjected humor also included some practical “Survival Tips” such as the best places to exchange currency,  prices to pay for beer and food and basic Czech phrases. We were also privileged to see and hear the amazing organ at St. James Basilica. It was a great introductory tour for a visit to Prague.

Following the tour we explored more of the transportation system by riding the subway and a tram line to its end and back.  It is a very well coordinated system and made it easy for us to get around with our 3 day pass. We topped off the day with a late lunch/early dinner at a small craft brewery.
