Day 29, Tuesday, 11 Sep: Prague, Czech Repubic

Prague has much of the charm of old Europe as we have seen in so many cities we have visited.  Unfortunately, It also had the largest crowds we have encountered on our entire trip. Anyone who knows us, knows that we are not crowd friendly, especially while on vacation. Also, today it was the hottest we have had so far: 30 C (86 F) and Wayne is not a fan of heat.

The day’s start was a bit of a challenge as we still had to figure out how to get tickets for the tram.  Fortunately, near the tram stop there was a gas station where the attendant very kindly changed a 10 euro bill into Koruna coins for us – so that problem was solved. We reached Old Town where it was blistering hot and mobbed with people (someone fed the pigeons a whole lot), got 3 day transit passes for the whole city and picked up a lot of information about Prague and its transit system. The people at the information center in Old Town were wonderful.

Old Town Hall

After a cappuccino for me and a milk shake for Peggy, we went up to the Old Town Hall tower where we were treated to a marvelous view of the city.  After that, we looked for a tour.  Being so hot, instead of taking a walking tour, we opted for an air conditioned hop on, hop off bus tour that would take us to the Prague Castle. (It’s supposed to cool down by Thursday, so we’ll do the walking tour then.) Unfortunately we got on the wrong tour bus to take us to the castle and because we don’t understand the Czech language we missed our transfer point to the correct tour bus. With the help of some very friendly people, we were guided to the a point where we could catch the tram up to the castle (using our newly acquired transit passes). We arrived at the castle entrance but couldn’t find any sign of our prepaid tour guide and after waiting around for about an hour, we hailed the tour bus operator who informed us that we had missed the last tour of the day. Well, so much for the plans of mice and men.  However, all is not lost as we completed the bus tour around the city (which by that time had become quite pleasant) and made plans for visiting the castle tomorrow morning.

On the bus, we also learned some interesting historical facts. Unlike Gdansk and Warsaw, Prague escaped World War II with very little physical damage. Apparently, from the air Prague looks much like Dresden so that in one of the allied bombing raids intended for Dresden, Prague took a hit.  Fortunately only one building was destroyed. After the war, that building was replaced with a design that was based on Fred Astair & Ginger Rogers and is called the Dancing Building. It’s an interesting looking building, but we just don’t see the famous dancing couple. After the bus tour we decided it was time for adult beverages (beer and wine) and dinner. Beverages and dinner, though not traditional Czech food, were excellent. During our dinner, we met a couple of very interesting women from Florida and had a delightful conversion with them.

After dinner we headed home on the tram – with no missed connections. We even caught a bus 2 minutes after getting off the tram that saved us walking up the hill to our place. (After 3 weeks without any kind of hill, the hills of Prague are daunting. Upon arrival at the apartment complex, we paid careful attention and made sure that we went to the correct apartment building. On the way there, we observed a beautiful sunset. It was truly a nice ending to our first full day in Prague.
