Day 60, Saturday 13 Oct: Paris

Happy birthday to daughter Melissa!

Well, our plan for today was to go to the Sacred Heart Basilica and then Notre Dame Cathedral. It was a beautiful clear day and we have been told the views from Sacre Couer (Sacred Heart) are second only to the Eiffel Tower.

We were on our way when Wayne discovered his credit card bill fold was missing from his front pocket. We immediately returned “home” and confirmed that yes in fact, Wayne had been a pick pocket victim on a very crowded train. We guess we are just not meant to be in France without interacting with the local police.

We immediately started the process of notifying the the bank and credit union. Thank heavens for Skype. We didn’t need to use our limited international minutes. After that process, we found the number for the local police and happily there was someone who spoke English both on the phone and at the police station when we went there to file the report. The officer was very kind and expressed regret for our troubles and seeing the less desirable side of Paris.

After all of that we returned “home”, and indulged in an adult beverage. We’ll try again tomorrow to see more Paris sights.

A word about where to stay, or not stay, in Paris. Most of you know by now that we usually stay outside large cities and commute in by public transit. This time, AirBnB put us up in a lovely apartment in the neighborhood of Bondy, an eastern suburb of Paris. The friendly policeman who took our report indicated that Bondy is not the safest area to stay in Paris and advised us that if we ever wish to stay in a Paris suburb again we should choose a suburb on the west side of the city. Having said that, we have not had any problems in our stay in Bondy (the theft of my credit cards was in central Paris on the metro), but will definitely heed his advice if we ever return.
