Day 25, England (28 September)

We are now halfway through our 7 week British Isles adventure. We want to take a moment to mention how extremely kind, friendly and helpful everyone has been. Our Airbnb hosts have been wonderful. Whether we are in a room in their home or separate apartment or cottage, they have gone out of their way to be helpful with providing toiletries, makings for tea and coffee and sightseeing ideas and directions. We have had many interesting interactions with residents as well as with our fellow travelers. Strangers on the street have always responded kindly to requests for help with directions.

For the last 3 days we have been busy trying to see some of the many sights that London has to offer. We have averaged walking about 7 – 10 miles per day and have been fortunate to see many of our planned sights. Although there are so many more to see, we decided to have a quiet day “at home” to catch up on bill paying, laundry and the blog before moving on to Bath tomorrow.

We walked into the Village of Chorleywood for breakfast this morning. It is a small but charming village with shops on 2 streets. While it has no bank or post office, it has 2 small restaurants, 3 cafes, 2 or 3 bakeries and a small “grocer/butcher” shop. We had a delicious breakfast and an interesting chat with the owner. Although he originally voted for Brexit, he now thinks it will be “terrible” for his business and the community. Warning, the rest of this paragraph is all about Brexit. He had some interesting opinions on Brexit, the EU and its members and the truthfulness of the politicians. “If their lips are moving, they are lying.” He does feel that most politicians are corrupt especially the EU leaders. He believes that Great Britain is at a disadvantage in that it follows the EU rules but the other countries do not and that Great Britain’s tax burden is too large. He believes that many workers from other countries working here, work on a cash basis to avoid paying taxes. Although he is no longer a Brexit supporter, he believes that the way the country is delaying Brexit is definitely hurting the country. Peggy overheard him stating to 3 gentlemen that whether you agree with the Brexit vote or not, the people voted and it needs to go through. In a democracy, whether you agree with the vote outcome or not the will of the people needs to be followed. He also believes that there will be tough times ahead for the country, but as in the past the country will be fine. Enough of Brexit.
