Our plans changed again today as our friend and hostess had taken ill and we would not be able to see her. So instead of heading toward Roseville, CA (near Sacramento), we drove up the road to Santa Rosa where we will spend the night tonight. Today is a work day as I have fallen behind in the blog and Peggy has a study to review for her IRB, both of which are going to take several hours. But we wanted to have some fun, too, and so we went off to do a little exploring before getting to work.
Santa Rosa is only a stone’s throw from Glen Ellen where we were staying, but it’s also only a stone’s throw from the ocean. California Parks has many parks with campsites along CA 1 and we went to one of them to check it out. It didn’t really matter that it was full as we couldn’t stay there tonight anyway, but it was a beautiful site and someday, hopefully, we’ll have the opportunity to camp there.
We drove along CA 1 from Bodega Bay to Jenner, just a few miles south of Fort Ross, then returned to Sabastapol and Santa Rosa on CA 116 which follows the Russian River near its mouth. (Interestingly, Fort Ross was founded by Russian colonists, and was the southernmost Russian colony in North America before Alaska was purchased from Russia.) The views along this road are spectacular.
