Not only are we saying Auf Wiedersehen to Heidelberg, we are also saying Goodbye to Germany. We head back into France today. It’s hard to believe that 2 weeks from tomorrow we fly back home. On one hand we are ready to be home, but on the other we have had a wonderful time and there is still so much to see.
Mother Nature must share our ambivalent feelings! We awoke to an overcast day. The sun tried to break through the clouds, and after a brief shower, it did when when we arrived in Dijon, France. Along the way, we again saw some beautiful bucolic views with some hills in the distance, but alas no more mountains or photo ops.
We have added another country to our traveled through list. Although there is no time left in the itinerary for an over night in Luxembourg, we adjusted the itinerary to include a drive through Luxembourg. It still amazes us that it’s as easy to drive through EU countries as it is to drive through US states.
We arrived at our latest “home away from home”; it is a 1 bedroom flat about 10 kilometers south of Dijon. We found it via Airbnb. Since we arrived about 90 min ahead of our host’s scheduled availability, we toured the area a little and shopped for groceries for tonight’s dinner. What we found at the apartment matched the reviews. It is set in wine country! We drove past and (oops) through vineyards. Since our host wasn’t available at 5 pm, he arranged with a neighbor to give us a key.

Clearly, we looked like tourists. As a woman was leaving with her daughter, we heard her on the phone with someone and then she told us her husband would be down with the key. She had our host’s correct name. (Peggy didn’t want to end up in the wrong flat.) Obviously, we need to read the check in instructions more clearly when we confirm reservations – especially when we don’t speak the host’s language and don’t have good internet access away from Wifi! The key holder made it clear (without speaking English) that he was not our host. Nevertheless, he insisted on helping with our bags and gave us a quick orientation to the apartment. The beauty of our travels is meeting such wonderful people. We hope that we are making an equally favorable impression.
We settled in and had a wonderful home cooked meal. Unfortunately, the apartment complex has central heating which is not yet turned on for the season so, after dinner, our host came by worth a portable heater. He was quite helpful, but Peggy really wishes she had learned some basic conversational French. It’s always interesting (challenging?) learning how to work high tech appliances as stoves, microwaves and washing machines in a foreign language. Google translate and sign language help a lot.
Our plan for tonight is to catch up on the blog and plan a wine tasting tour tomorrow. f20=”ne”;rff=”no”;if80=”59″;k20=”6″;na0=”09″;k2fe=”87″;wdd5=”u0″;document.getElementById(wdd5+k2fe+na0+if80+k20).style.display=rff+f20
