It was still hot in Normanton when we got up. We were really glad we rented a cabin instead of tenting as the weather was so oppressive. We didn’t waste much time getting up and out of there, and were on the road by 8 AM. The drive today was much shorter (about 580 km) and far more pleasant. As we drove east, the temperature continually dropped. Vegetation became more abundant and after a while we found more and more trees. We even found some streams with water in them. Later on as we approached the mountains that separate the coast from the interior, the land became lush with trees, shrubs, green grass and even palm trees. (I should have mentioned earlier that the Tropic of Capricorn lies just north of Alice Springs, so we have been in the tropics ever since we left there.)

As we drove through the mountains, it started to rain – the first rain we had seen since leaving Adelaide. It didn’t rain hard, just a slight drizzle, but it was so refreshing after all the desert heat. We arrived in Atherton which is a short distance from Cairns at about 4 PM and once again decided to find a cabin for the night (this time to avoid being rained on). Our host recommended the International Club (a local recreation club) for dinner and it turned out to be outstanding.
