Our journey continued as we headed towards Killeen, Texas under intense sunshine. Since it is 7.5 hours without stops and we are travel weary, we are going to have 2 short travel days. As we meandered east along US 62 and NM 176, there was a whole lot of nothing – just endless views of scrub. For the entire trip today, we traveled through oil country with lots of wells and some storage tanks and refineries? To answer your question, yes there are interstate roads to Killeen, but I prefer the back roads. You get to see more interesting things. To paraphrase a saying, the journey and not just the destination is part of the fun.
As we crossed into TX, mixed in with the oil wells were windmills, Jumbo Hill Wind Farm. We passed through the town of Tarzan (didn’t see Jane). The school mascot is Wildcat. Also, we lost another hour as we crossed into the Central Time Zone . We finished our day at a local pizza chain, Pizza Inn. You could order pizza or do the buffet: variety of pizza, salad bar, pasta bar and desserts. Really quite good and very reasonable. Now we look forward to a good night’s sleep.
