Europe: Days 55, 56 (May 29, 30)

We continued our journey west and a little south Sunday morning under beautiful blue skies. We again enjoyed fantastic scenery with ocean and rolling country side views. (We also experienced afternoon rain followed by sun again.) The bridges and tunnels that we traversed are amazing engineering feats.

Our destination was a small city called Pontevedra in the northwest corner of Spain. DSCN1977It is a marvelous mix of old world  and modern world. There is documented evidence that it was settled in the 1st century and probably earlier than that. It has one of the oldest Old Towns in Europe. It is also a provincial capital and has a university as well. It’s architecture is a great mix of old and new with a Baroque era church built in the 17th century connected to a modern museum. Another wonderful discovery for us.

To add to our good fortune, we found a wonderful apartment hotel, Dabarca Hotel Apartments. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We have a 1 bedroom apartment with kitchenette AND washing machine for less than our hotel room in San Sebastian. There are many interesting things to see here in Pontevedra and we are hoping to stay an extra day!

DSCN1982As it turned out, we enjoyed ourselves in Pontevedra so much we decided to stay an extra day. We had fun wandering up and down the streets of the old quarter or “historic downtown”. The churches are so beautiful inside and out. The city is committed to preserving the old buildings while functioning in the 21st century.

DSCN2003In 2003, the food market was remodeled with the idea of adding “more space and diversity.” During remodeling, parts of the wall of the ancient city from Roman times were discovered. Surprisingly (to us at least) Monday morning is a quiet time at the market with only about 1/4 of the stalls open. It was still fun to admire the architecture and the views from the top (second) floor of the market.

DSCN2007From the market, we had a great view of the bridge of Burgo. It was built in the 12 century on the site of a Roman bridge and hence the name of the town which means Old Bridge in English. The bridge is in excellent condition because of the restorations that have occurred between the 12th & 20th centuries. There is a modern bridge built in 1995 – just another example of old and modern Pontevedra coexisting.

It has been a wonderful stay in Pontevedra and we hate to leave. Unfortunately, our time is running out. Tomorrow we will enter Portugal, our final country on this trip. We will head first to Porto, the location of the finest port wines in the world. We are looking forward to sampling some of the port wine and only wish that we could bring back gallons of it.

Adios for now,
Wayne & Peggy
