Today is son Joe’s birthday. Happy birthday, Joe! We are presently staying in a village, Gevrey Chambertin, about 10 kilometers south of Dijon. It is in Bourgogne wine country and there are vineyards all around us with many tasting cellars or Caves as they are called here. Our plan for today was wine tasting and touring a cheese factory.

The wine cellar, Phiippe Laclerc, was a small, beautique wine cellar, was very interesting. It has been in existence since the 1970s, but clearly the cellar has been around for much longer. First we wandered around part of the stone wine cellar. We were hit with the aroma of old wine as we descended the stairs. In the cellar, there was a large dining area with ancient furniture and fireplaces. It would be fun to have lunch or dinner served down there with a large fire going in the fireplace. They sometimes have catered events there, but unfortunately, we won’t be able to attend.

This winery and most of the wineries in the Bourgogne region produce (Burgundy) wine only from pinot noir grapes. (Bear in mind, Burgundy is an appellation, not a variety of grape and there is no such thing as California burgundy.) We had 6 different tastings from different sections, called Climats, with different soil, topography, drainage and orientation to sun and wind which all affects the taste. They were all quite good with some taste differences. Of course we bought a bottle which we will pair with a home cooked meal when we get to Brittany and have a kitchen.

Next we went to the cheese factory. It was closed when we went by yesterday, but we noticed the hours for today. We didn’t realize you can only observe the cheese being made on certain mornings and never in the afternoons. (It was afternoon.) No worries, there were very informative videos about the process. Then we had a cheese tasting complete with an explanation about each of the five cheeses we tasted and a glass of wine and some bread to go with them. We bought some cheese which will go well with our baguette and wine from last night – a yummy snack.

Our plan was to do another wine tasting but after the wine with cheese and the earlier tasting, we decided that was enough wine for one afternoon. Wayne was driving after all!

Since it was a chilly, mostly overcast day, we headed back to the flat to make reservations for our next 2 stops and relax and read.
