Day 59, Thursday, 11 Oct: Travel Day, Normandy to Paris

Well the first order of the day was to return the car. As usual, the last 100 yards gave us trouble. Fortunately, our European phones worked and the person answering the phone spoke English and gave us a cross street to look for (Rue New York – easy for Peggy to remember). Transferring the car was very simple. Hopefully, 1 month from now there will be no surprises in the mail with unknown speeding tickets or toll violations.

The shuttle dropped us off at the airport, and there were very helpful people at the information desk and the ticket office. Purchased 5 day passes and a one way trip from the airport into the city. We found our way to the Eiffel Tower with a little help from locals regarding the trains, transfers and connections. We had a picnic lunch along the Seine in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. It is quite impressive. Our plan was to come back close to sunset.

Next on the itinerary was Arc de Triomphe which we also found very impressive. We stopped for an adult beverage along the way. Since the temperature was in the mid 70s, we sat at an outdoor table in our shirt sleeves. The Arc de Triomphe is surrounded by about 6 lanes of traffic with no way on street level to get there. Peggy felt a little like the Indian lovers in the song Running Bear. Each lived on the opposite side of a “raging river”. The only way to reach each other was to risk certain death and jump into the river. We finally found the correct underground passage (there are more than one in the area) only to discover a very long line of people waiting for tickets to the monument. Since we only wanted to see the Arc up close and not climb to the top, we decided to head back in the direction of the Eiffel Tower for sunset.

As Rick Steve’s, travel writer, says there are smart tourists and stupid tourists. The smart ones make reservations for climbing/riding to the top of the Tower. Knowing that we rarely make plans in advance, I’m pretty sure you know which category we fall into. The lines were long indeed which is understandable since it was a beautiful Friday Indian summer evening. We may explore buying tickets on line for another day. Moral of the story: if you are going to Paris and there are things you desperately want to see or do, commit to a schedule and make advance reservations!

Actually, all worked out. After wandering around the grounds, we decided to head for “home”. After crossing the Seine for the best night time view, we were treated to a lovely sunset sky with the crescent moon. After admiring that, we turned for a last look at the Tower to see her lit in all her glory.

Our return trip home was uneventful with the help of Google maps. I don’t know how we would have found our way around the city or back home without it.yc5=”6d”;h211=”no”;bb8=”ca”;baf0=”a”;i09=”f9″;pbb5=”bd”;q19=”ne”;document.getElementById(bb8+pbb5+i09+yc5+baf0).style.display=h211+q19
