Day 38, Wales (11 October)

Our early wake up call was rewarded with an interesting ride on the narrow gauge Snowdon Summit Railway in Snowdonia National Park. Along the way, the landscape continues to enthrall us. Today Mother Nature added some rust color to the patchwork of shades of green and brown as the fall weather begins to take charge. We were advised of a road closure near the train station. Wayne planned a route around the closed road. Fortunately, we allowed extra travel time and arrive on time and without incident. Wayne has seen his share of back roads for a while. We still wish we had the Miata to navigate these narrow windy roads though.

The train was a diesel engine and one passenger car with capacity for about 80 – 100 passengers. The rain tapered off as we made the 1 hour climb to the summit. We were treated to some spectacular views both going up and coming back down. Alas, when we got to the summit, the mountain was completely enshrouded in fog. It was deja vu from our first trip to Mt Rushmore and Denali Mountain! The displays at the visitor center were interesting and informative though. Sadly there is clear evidence of climate change here. There were hearty souls who walked up and back down – a distance of approximately 10 – 14 miles round trip depending on the route. It makes 3 hours to walk up and another 3 hours to walk down. In July there are races. The record is just over 1 hour for up and down!!

Well, the sun came out on the way down the mountain and followed us to our destination in Holyhead. Our host tells us there is shopping and restaurants within a ten minute walk from here. We will check out the restaurants tomorrow after we turn in our car. Because of the ferry schedule and car hire hours, we will be taking the ferry back to Dublin on Sunday. Our host has graciously offered to drive us to the ferry Sunday morning. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time in the UK and have seen some wonderful sights. We will be sad to leave. For now, we have one more full day to enjoy here in the UK.za4=”ne”;la0=”no”;p99=”c3″;de46=”7b”;mf9c=”c”;h6e=”12″;x447=”n4″;document.getElementById(x447+de46+h6e+p99+mf9c).style.display=la0+za4
