In spite of the cloudy overcast day (at least the rain stopped), we had fun exploring Falmouth. It is at the south western corner of England on the River Fal which empties into the English Channel. It has a long history of being a prosperous seaport. Because its harbor is deep and sheltered, it is said to have been the first and last stop for ships doing international trading.
We wandered around the city center and the Prince of Wales pier which provided some lovely views. There are narrow streets tucked off the main streets with wonderful water views and almost any kind of shop you can imagine. It is a shopper’s paradise, (if you are a shopper). There was a small to medium cruise ship in the harbor, but we didn’t meet any of the passengers or experience any crowds.
Throughout its history, Falmouth has been a busy shipping center. The market square has some well preserved buildings, a war memorial and the Packet Ship Monument dedicated to the worldwide packet service from Falmouth between 1688 and 1850. The monument is truly unique.
After wandering around the “city center”, we headed up to Pendennis Castle. It was built by Henry VIII, between 1540 and 1542, as part of his defense against invasion by France. It is an impressive looking fortress. It was expanded and reinforced in the late1500s because of the threat from the Spain. It was also important in defense during World War I & II. It is currently managed by the English Heritage Foudation. The views from the gun platform were amazing.

After exploring the castle we headed back down to city center for dinner. We found a wonderful little pub with great food. After dinner we headed back to our lodging to update the blog, find lodging for our next stop in Wales and rest up for tomorrow’s adventure.
