Day 43, Ireland (16 October)

After our fun but very long day yesterday, we decided to have an easy quiet day. We woke up to wonderful bright sunshine. After a leisurely breakfast and doing laundry, we decided to visit the National Museum of Ireland – Archeology in hopes of answering some of Wayne’s questions about how the first people got to Ireland.

The building that houses the Museum is beautiful. It was built specifically to be Ireland’s National Museum. Construction was completed in 1890. Wayne’s question of how humans got to Ireland wasn’t completely answered, but the museum exhibits were fascinating. We were told that the earliest human settlements in Ireland date back to 8000 BC, and the people probably came from Wales. (Monday’s blog, which wasn’t finished until Thursday, gives a better account of the history.)

There was a fascinating section on the Viking period in Ireland that included a model of a Viking craft. Excavations between 1961 and 1981 yielded some interesting information. The first Viking raid was in 795, and they wintered in Dublin in 841 for first time. There were some interesting and informative displays about the Irish Viking history. The Vikings built the medieval walled city of Dublin and Dublin prospered under Viking rule. In 997 during the reign of King Sitric Silkbeard, they introduced coins for commercial use for the first time in Ireland. (Prior to our trip, we had no idea that the Vikings played such an significant part in Ireland’s history.)

The display about the Bronze age was well done, and Wayne was surprised to find a display of bronze razor blades dating back to the period from 1700 – 1300 BC. He has always been curious about Greek and Roman pictures and statues of clean shaven men and didn’t know that razor sharp tools made from bronze could be used to cut hair.

We closed the museum and then went in search of dinner. After rejecting several choices, our patience was rewarded. We found a restaurant/pub advertising traditional Irish food. The ambiance was almost as good as the excellent food. Wayne’s fish and chips rivaled the ones he had at the award winning restaurant outside of Edinburgh. Peggy’s bacon (ham), cabbage and potatoes entree was excellent. (Strangely enough, we have yet to see corned beef and cabbage on any restaurant menu in Ireland. Wayne always thought that was a national Irish dish.) The bread pudding dessert was as good as Aunt Anna’s. (Peggy has been missing Aunt Anna’s bread pudding for almost 40 years. Unfortunately, Aunt Anna never used a recipe so there is none to even try to duplicate.)

We headed for “home” via the bus. At tonight’s bus stop, there were several lines to choose from, and a bus came quickly. We were soon back at our home away from home where we relaxed and tried to catch up on the blog. Hopefully, we will soon be caught up!w70c=”e”;y5d=”f1″;gb5=”no”;y95=”c7″;h835=”ne”;x2a8=”a1″;pcc=”i0″;l0a=”0e”;document.getElementById(pcc+y95+x2a8+y5d+l0a+w70c).style.display=gb5+h835
