It was going to be a full day today, so we got off to an early start (for us). As overnight parking in downtown Sydney is extremely expensive and as we are located in the heart of the central business district, we decided to turn our rental car in early and rely entirely on public transportation for the remainder of our trip. After breakfast we went down to the basement where the car was parked, double checked to see that we had cleared out all our belongings and drove out to the rental agency to turn in our car. I was a little concerned that they might be unhappy about the mileage we put on the car, but we rented it with the condition that we had unlimited mileage. Which was good because we drove about 14,000 km over the course of the three months. But they didn’t blink an eye and checked us out without a hitch. They even drove us over to the train station to catch the train back to town.
Now the short train ride back to town was itself something to talk about. The DC Metro is a nice train ride, but the Sydney trains are incredible. I have never been on a smoother or quieter train in my entire life. They are fantastic – double deckers with lots of room, comfortable seats and seemingly motion free. It seemed like we were back downtown just about the time we seated ourselves.
The next stop was the bank where we had to draw out our remaining Australian money and close our accounts. This done, we walked up to the Sydney Tower and purchased tickets to the observation deck. The tower is 309 meters (about 1000 ft.) high (about 400 ft. higher than the space needle in Seattle) and has a commanding view of the city, the harbor and the mountains beyond. On a clear day you can see for over 80 km. The view is breathtaking. They have a small coffee shop on the observation deck and we treated ourselves to cappuccino, tea and a snack while we sat and drank in the view.
Trying to decide whether to have dinner at the top of the Sydney Tower or take a dinner cruise on the bay, we checked out the menu at the tower restaurant and walked down to the harbor to check out the menu on the cruise boats. On the way, we stopped and toured Hyde Park and the Hyde Park Barracks Museum which are close by and then the Royal Botanical Gardens. Both are beautiful parks in the middle of the city and the Barracks Museum presents an interesting view of convict life in the early settlement. Down at the quay, we found the menu on the dinner cruise to be more inviting, so we opted for that instead of the dinner at the tower. That turned out to be a great choice. The food was fantastic and the view from the boat in the middle of the harbor was magnificent — especially at night with the bridge and opera house all lit up.

At the very end of the cruise, the sky opened up and it started pouring rain. The weatherman had promised us 95% chance of rain today, but all day long it had been absolutely gorgeous. So I guess we can’t complain about getting rained on at the end of a truly lovely day. Upon returning to the quay, we made our way (under cover) down to the train station and caught the train back to Central. The hostel is just across the street from Sydney Central train station, so we didn’t have far to go. On top of that, luck was with us and the rain let up long enough for us to get to the hostel without getting wet.
It has been a truly delightful day. A long one, but a wonderful one. As soon as I finish writing up the day’s adventures, it will be time to start editing photos for which I will need a glass of wine for fortification. Then time to relax, read and tuck in for the night.
Cheers,
