Day 69: Goondiwindi to Stanthorpe, QLD

We started off the day with the cotton plantation tour which was very interesting. I had never seen cotton harvested or processed and it was fascinating to see. Afterwards, we went to the Goondiwindi Cotton Mill where they sell the clothes made from their local cotton. Up until about 11 -12 years ago, the cotton was milled and the clothes were made locally, but quality labor became scarce and the mills closed. The owners were forced to outsource to China, but they keep a close eye on the production in China. We returned from the tour about 1 PM and started out on our way to Brisbane with the first stop being Texas, QLD. We were told that the town was named after the Republic of Texas because of some similarity in its geography and history which I didn’t really understand. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the Alamo.

We arrived in Texas, walked around the town (about three city blocks with a population of 900), stopped at the local grocery for a snack and left about a half hour later. It’s one of those places you would never find unless you were really looking for it.

We got as far as Stanthorpe at about 4 PM. Stanthorpe is still about 200 km from Brisbane and, as the weather was fair, we set up our tent and went into town to explore. We had heard about a brewery in Stanthorpe and discovered that it was a combination lodge and restaurant that made its own beer. So off we went to the brewery. As it turned out, the beer was excellent and so was the dinner which consisted of broiled kangaroo tail, vegetables and a potato-bacon soup. For dessert, we had a marvelous crème brulee. We returned to our campsite following dinner, read for a while and tucked in for the night.

After about three hours sleep, I found myself laying on hard ground as our air mattress had become deflated. It was a real hassle trying to figure out the cause, repair it, re-inflate it and get our bed back together. After that, I was wide awake and couldn’t get back to sleep. On top of that, it was about 45 degrees outside and I was cold, so I sat in the car with the heater on while I read for a couple of hours and then went back into the tent to sleep. Fortunately, I went to sleep immediately and slept well the remainder of the night. Tomorrow night, we’ll find ourselves a cabin somewhere as it’s getting too cold for camping.

Cheers,
