Day 77: Cowra, NSW to Canberra, ACT

The rain had let up during the night and it was a beautiful morning. We had breakfast and got off to an early start. Before leaving Cowra, we had to visit the Japanese Garden which was started by Japanese POW’s during WWII and later expanded with the help of the Japanese government. The Japanese Garden is a huge, beautifully landscaped arboretum with streams, bridges, waterfalls, ponds with loads of koy and beautifully shaped flowering shrubs. It is truly magnificent. It is probably about the same size as the Washington Arboretum in NE Washington, DC, but is much more beautiful. That such a magnificent place could emerge from such a tragedy as WWII makes one think there is still hope for the human race.

We left the Japanese Garden and drove around the town for awhile looking at old buildings and churches at which time the weather became threatening again so we left for Canberra. The road to Canberra passes through more of the Blue Mountains that provide wonderful views of valleys and hills beyond. The only problem is that these narrow back country roads, like so many in Australia, leave no room to pull off for photos. So we’ll just have to keep the images in our memories.

We arrived at our friends’ house in Canberra about 5:00. After visiting for awhile, we had dinner, visited some more and tucked in for the night.
