Day 75: Blackheath, NSW

We awoke this morning to a clear blue sky and a chill wind. Breakfast came with the room and we ate it very leisurely waiting for it to warm up a bit. About 10:30 we decided that cold or not, we had to get going if we were going to see the places we wanted to see. First on the list was the Three Sisters which is a giant rock formation formed by erosion of the sandstone mountain sides by wind and water. It somewhat resembles the 12 Apostles on the coast in Victoria.

The second stop was at Evans Lookout overlooking the Grand Canyon of Australia. This is an immense canyon formed by the Grose River cutting through the soft sandstone of the Blue Mountains. It is not as large as the Grand Canyon of Arizona or even the Capertee Valley which cuts through the Sydney Basin, but it is a magnificent valley covered with Blue Gum (a form of eucalyptus ) trees which give off a resinous vapor that causes the valley to have a bluish cast. (Hence the name Blue Mountains). There are a number of trails leading around the canyon ridge and we hiked for a while along one of them until it got too cold. Along the trail is a wonderful view of Bridal Veil Falls, a stream that falls from the very top to nearly the very bottom of the canyon.

The third stop was another viewpoint called Govett’s Leap overlooking another part of the Grand Canyon. At this location there was another trail the led to a lookout point overlooking Horseshoe Falls. As we didn’t have good hiking boots for this trail, we didn’t get to the lookout point, but we did get a limited view of the falls. Unfortunately, at this time of year, there’s not a lot of water in the falls so it’s not as spectacular as it would be in the spring. We had a delightful dinner at the Italian restaurant across the street from our motel. Once the blog is posted we will read for a bit before turning in for the night.
