Day 73: Denman, NSW

We awoke to another magnificent morning. Clear blue sky, gorgeous sunshine and balmy breeze. The temperature is right around 65 deg F. during the day which, for me, is ideal. Peggy would rather have it warmer. Unfortunately, however, the night temperatures are getting very cold. With the very low humidity, the night temperatures fall to about 40 deg F which is just too cold for camping, so it looks like our tenting days are over for this trip.

The caravan park where we are staying is truly delightful. It is well laid out with lots of space and a large park like area with ponds and picnic areas. The cabins are relatively new, spacious and well equipped making meal preparation very pleasant. At this time, there don’t seem to be too many occupants, but I imagine that in the summertime, it is totally occupied.

While it is a very small town, Denman is in the middle of the upper Hunter River Valley which is noted for its wineries. We selected three to visit today and started off with the Two Rivers Winery which is very close to the caravan park where we are staying. Unlike many wineries in the U.S., there is no charge for wine tasting, and we were given ample samples of all the wines they made. We stayed at the Two Rivers Winery for about two hours chatting with the hostess who, it turned out, is also a quilter. Needless to say, Peggy and she had lots to talk about. After the wine tasting and purchasing some of the wonderful dessert wines, we took a drive up the hill through the vineyards for a marvelous view of the valley below. It was truly one of those days where you could see forever and the valley and vineyards, with the mountains in the background, was one of the most beautiful views I have seen.

Following the Two Rivers Winery we visited the Cruikshank Winery located only about 5 km distant. While the view was not as spectacular as the Two Rivers, the wine was every bit is good. Like the other wineries, we were given ample samples of everything they produce. They have so many great wines it’s hard to say which ones we liked best. After two more hours of wine sampling, we selected three bottles to take with us. By the time we left, I had sampled so much wine that we had to cancel our planned visit to the third winery. Also, we’re beginning to run out of space in our small car.

Afterwards, we returned to our cabin and waited until 6 PM when dinner would be served at the Royal Hotel. Tonight we had pizza which was unlike American pizza, but delicious. Not being in the mood for more alcohol, I settled for cappuccino with my pizza. We then returned to the cabin where I am now writing up the blog entry for the day. Tomorrow we will head south in the direction of Mt. Victoria.

Cheers,
Wayne & Peggy
