For the first day in about 1 month, we set off under cloudy skies with a forecast of rain. The overcast skies persisted all day, and finally gave way to rain for the last 2 hours of our 8 hour travel day. We even had some thunder and lightning. We can’t complain though. Other than a short burst of rain in Manitoba, this is our first real rainfall since we left Tennessee.
As we said farewell to Long Lake, we immediately came upon another lake. This area of Northern Ontario could easily be called “Land of Lakes and Rivers”. It seems like there is another lake or river around every corner. From Longlac to Cochran, there’s almost no sign of human development. It is delightful driving with almost not traffic and beautiful scenery.
The downside (if you can call it that) is there are fewer services. After breakfast, we went to feed the car. We had spotted a gas station about a mile before we stopped for the night and we found out that was the only game in town for gas. So we backtracked a short distance for gas this morning and it was a good thing we did as a sign at the edge of town told us there was no gas for the next 212 km (about 120 miles). Before gassing up, we had only 110 miles of gas left, so it’s a good thing we did.
Our GPS story for the day: We decided to make a rest stop in Cochran, ON and look for a McDonald’s for a chocolate shake. We did the usual “McDonald’s near us” on Google Maps and it told us there was one on 5th avenue about 2 minutes away. Then, when you asked for directions, it gave us a map to McDonald’s in Calgary, about a day and a half drive back the way we came. As it turned out, there is no McDonald’s in Cochran. Proof that you can’t believe everything you read on the internet.
