It was an uneventful drive from Medicine Hat to Canmore. It has been interesting watching the scenery and topography change as we travel west. The flat prairie gradually gave way to hills with mountains in the distance. Along with wheat fields and a few canola fields, we began to see more cattle, storage areas for grain, a few wind farms and a large solar farm. The contrast between the brilliant yellow of the canola fields and the muted yellow of the wheat fields was interesting, but alas we could not get a picture! Much of the day’s travel paralleled the train tracks with very long trains with mostly grain cars. (We wouldn’t want to be waiting at a crossing for those trains to pass!) The closer to the mountains we traveled, the more majestic they appear with their craggy tops. Occasionally, you can see small patches of snow on some of the tops.
We decided to return to the Wapiti campground, after a 17 year absence. The overflow area for tent camping that we stayed in last time has been converted to RV spaces, but otherwise, it looks pretty much like it did the last time we were here.
Even though the forecast was for rain tomorrow (Thursday) we decided to pitch our camp here again and spend a few days catching our breath. The long journey across the prairie was tedious and we’re ready for some R&R. The views from our campsite are spectacular. After setting up camp we went to Canmore Brewing Company for drinks and dinner. Although they don’t have a kitchen, they do have good butter chicken pub pies and warm soft pretzels. There was no wine so Peggy had a stout beer. She enjoyed it so much, she said that perhaps she needs to be sampling beers instead of drinking wine at the breweries. Wayne enjoyed the porter.
After dinner, we returned to camp, read our story for a couple of hours and tucked in for the night. Tomorrow, we will see how Canmore has changed since we were here last.
