We got off to an early start today. Had breakfast about 8:30 and were on the road by 10. It was raining when we got up but it let up by the time we got under way. The natives were all grateful for the rain as they had experienced a long drought. We were grateful for the rain also as it substantially diminished the sulfur stench that permeates the town.

Our goal today was to make it to Tongariro National Park with a couple of stops along the way at Orakei Korako cave and thermal park and Huka Falls. The countryside around Orakei Korako is magnificent. To get to the park there is a small ferry that takes you across Lake Ohakuri. In the park, there are numerous vents out of which steam and hot water periodically explode. There are also mud baths that steam and bubble constantly. Near the top is a large cave opening with a pool of hot water at the bottom. The hot water from the geysers with its sulfurous deposits leaves a colorful trail going down the hillside and into the lake below.

After leaving Orakei Korako we drove around Lake Taupo which is a large beautiful lake. On its eastern shore is the town of Taupo which is primarily a resort town. Further south we found the road to take us to Huka Falls which is on the Waikato River. It’s a narrow river with beautiful blue rapids that must rush along at about 40 km ph. The falls are not big, but they are gorgeous. More than 200,000 litres of water flow over the falls every second.

We finally arrived at Tongariro National Park. Several scenes from Lord of the Rings were filmed at this park including Mordor and Mt. Doom. We will take in the sights tomorrow. For tonight, we found ourselves a place to stay and do our laundry, and then it will be an early night for us as we are both bushed. So until tomorrow.
