Day 14: Tongariro World Heritage Area

Today was a day for relaxation. We awoke to a beautiful blue sky, had a leisurely breakfast and left to go up to the mountain at about 11:30. Initially, we spent some time at the visitor center, then went up to the ski area. Our original plan was to take the ski lift up to the top of Mt. Ruapehu, but the mountain was fogged in, so we did the walk around Mead’s Wall where they filmed part of the Lord of the Rings. Afterwards, we had lunch hoping that the weather would clear up, but unfortunately it didn’t. So we didn’t get to go to the top. Mt. Ruapehu is the largest ski area and the most active volcano in New Zealand. It last erupted in 1995 and 1996. They say that it erupts about every 25 to 30 years. (So we don’t have to worry at this time.) The terrain around the mountain is extremely rocky with little vegetation – truly desolate and forbidding. A perfect setting for Mordor and Lord Sauron.

From Mt. Ruapehu, Mt. Ngauruhoe (aka Mt. Doom) is clearly visible. It was another location for the Lord of the Rings movie. Both locations were used in the episode where Frodo and Sam followed Gollum up the mountain to destroy the ring. In the photo gallery, you can see “Mt. Doom” half hidden in clouds in one of the photos and without the cloud cover in the other photo.

At the end of the day, we had a lovely dinner at the old train station. Until the mid 1980’s it was an active train station for the town of National Park. Now it’s a delightful restaurant/museum where the food is good and reasonable, and the atmosphere is wonderful.
