Day 17: Masterton, NZ

It was another beautiful day in Masterton. Again, we had a leisurely breakfast and spent some time just investigating and planning. As it turns out, Masterton is in the middle of the Wairarapa Valley and just off the Wairarapa Wine Trail. So, after getting our bearings, we hit the “trail” in search of the nectar of the gods. On the way to Martinborough in the heart of the wine country, we stopped at Stonehenge Aotearoa. Modeled after the historic Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England, Stonehenge Aotearoa is built on the same scale, but is not a replica.  It is a complete and working structure designed and built for its precise location in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand to demonstrate how they can be used to study the motion of the earth and moon with respect to the sun and stars in the southern hemisphere. It was built in 2005 and provides an astronomical calendar showing dates and seasons based on the position of the sun and certain groups of stars seen from “down under”. It tells a fascinating story and demonstrates how the Polynesians were able to navigate from Asia to Polynesia, New Zealand and even to Hawaii. The migration of humans from their origins in Africa over the course of hundreds of thousands of years has to be one of the most fascinating stories in history—one that I would like to know much more about.

After leaving Stonehenge, we started off for the Martinborough Vineyards in Martinborough. At this winery, we found a very nice riesling which we decided would make a good after dinner wine. Then we went to Coneys Winery (also in Martinborough) and had a wonderful snack along with 3 reisling samples, a pinot gris, a pino noir and a syrah. Here we wound up purchasing the pinot gris, pino noir and the syrah, all of which were wonderful. Both wineries were very small and charged a small fee ($4NZ) for the wine tasting, but then they credited the fee to any purchase you made.

Our photos for the day concentrate entirely on the Stonehenge as the wineries were pretty nondescript. (If you’ve seen one winery, you’ve seen them all – with few exceptions) Tomorrow we head for more Lord of the Rings filming sites near Wellington, so we have to get up early. So, until tomorrow,
