Day 18, Friday, 31 Aug: Berlin

Before continuing our sightseeing, we needed to find new accommodations since our lovely pension apartment isn’t available tonight. We got off to an early start and after locating and checking into our new place, we walked the 2 km to the train. Today we mastered navigating the train system without any help. We were even able to help a fellow foreign traveler!

We decided to resume our bus tour of Berlin today. We enjoy getting an overview of the cities we visit this way.  We usually do this on our first day, but we had places in mind in Berlin that we wanted to be sure we saw first. Peggy also likes the commentary which usually provides some interesting history and trivia. Additionally, we get some good views of the more famous sites but generally not good photo ops. (Photos taken from the bus are always blurry because of the bus motion and then there are obstacles in the view whenever the bus stops.) Then we  go back to the places that really interested us.

Model of Nickolaiviertel

After the bus tour, we went in the direction of the Nikolaivertel (Quarter or section). Our helpful local in Falkensee recommended that we visit there. It’s one of the oldest sections of Berlin, and in 1979 the East Berlin government began plans for rebuilding & restoring the area to match the way it was in the in Old Town Berlin in the19th century.  Nikolaikirche (Saint Nicholas Church) was rebuilt and the surrounding buildings were restored. Town houses and other buildings were built according to plans of the 19th century. The project was completed in 1987 in time for the 750th anniversary of the first recorded history of Berlin.

Nikolaikirche is now a museum with wonderful artifacts of the church and Berlin’s history. We also enjoyed an organ concert there. We topped off the day with a wonderful dinner at a real German restaurant. (You can find any kind of food in Berlin, but authentic German food is hard to find.)
After a good dinner and a little more wandering around we found our way to the train station and headed back “home”. Tomorrow, we hope to get an early start to Gdansk in Poland, about a 500 km drive.
