Day 23: Te Anau & Milford Sound

It was a wonderful day today – someone else did the driving. The day was overcast, but warm (not hot) and no rain. We got up at 6:30, had breakfast, checked the mail and went out to meet our tour guide. It was a small group (6 adults and 3 very well behaved kids) which made it very nice. It’s about 120 km from Te Anau to Milford Sound and we stopped at several places to take photos. The mountains in this part of the country are incredible. They rise straight up with shear granite walls that look like they could come tumbling down any minute. (Occasionally, some do. The danger of avalanches and rock slides is pretty high at times.) One of the stops was at Mirror Lake which provides reflections of the mountains. In some instances, the reflections were better than the real picture.

Unlike my daughter who did the Milford Track on foot in January, we did the Homer Tunnel (by bus). The trip took us about an hour instead of the 4 days it took her. When we arrived at the sound, we went on a two hour boat ride that took us from the inner harbor out to the mouth of the sound and into the Tasman Sea. It’s a magnificent ride with shear walls rising straight up out of the water to heights of about 2,000 feet, numerous water falls and sea life all around. It’s interesting that the cliffs are covered with trees, shrubs and lichens that are all sewing the seeds of their own destruction by opening crevices in the rock that weaken it and cause it to break off and fall into the sea.

We left Milford Sound about 4 and got back to Te Anau about 6. We had been fed so much that we weren’t very hungry, so we stopped at a store for some bread, wine and cheese and made that our supper. Tomorrow, we will be heading for Queenstown. We have no specific plans, but will explore and see what there is.
