This morning under light rain, we bid farewell to Chorleywood and London. We were grateful that the heavy rain and wind from last night was over. After a couple of wrong turns, a little heavy rain and some traffic delays, we arrived in Bath. Traffic was really heavy and parking was impossible downtown so we decided to adjust our plans and went ahead to get settled in at our lodging about 2 miles outside Bath. It is a lovely 2 level apartment that was converted from a garage. Our host greeted us as we were trying to figure out parking. He gave us some great tips for local shopping and getting into Bath.
The first order of business after getting settled in was to get some food. On our way to the nearby grocery, we came a cross a pub (the Red Lion) where we had a drink and arranged for dinner later after stocking our larder with food for breakfast. The fish and chips at the Red Lion were good. The conversation with the locals at the other table was wonderful. Next to our table was an extended family having dinner – the youngest member being exactly 1 week old. Grandma was quite proud. It was fun to observe the family interaction and for Peggy to be that close to such a little one.
Peggy apologizes if this paragraph is too political. After the usual questions of where we are from and where in the US they have traveled, one of the group asked if we were Trump supporters. We acknowledged that we were not. We had a very interesting conversation about British and American politics. He was clearly a Trump supporter. He felt that Trump is a strong leader and gives strength to Boris Johnson. Peggy believes that it was pretty clear that he is a Brexit supporter. Our British friend seemed to feel that it is Europe against Great Britain and that the EU needs Great Britain more than Great Britain needs the EU and that Boris Johnson will get Brexit done. He likes the support that Trump gives Johnson for moving ahead with Brexit. One interesting fact we learned is that Trump’s mother emigrated from Scotland. Therefore, some of the English think that Trump is half English. Clearly, our British friend is ready to claim Trump. It was a very interesting and friendly discussion. We love talking to people with different opinions and getting to meet and talk with the locals. (That’s one of the main advantages of our “driveabout tours” and staying outside the central parts of cities.) We have gotten a different perspective on Brexit from our travels and conversations. Wayne’s informal poll is now 6 to 2 against Brexit. Anti-Brexit sentiment seems stronger in Northern Ireland and Scotland than in England.
